Meeting up IRL with people from the internet?

It's something I've never wanted to do, but now I find myself in a position where I will be meeting up with someone I met online.

I've always been very cautious, perhaps ridiculously so. The idea of meeting up with a stranger was always something that made me uncomfortable and while this is a person you've gotten to know on the internet they're still practically a stranger to you. A lot has happened to change my view slightly, however I still remain cautious, or I'd like to think I do... Despite my change in plans. I don't want to meet up with anyone else, just this one person. I've gotten close with them, way closer than many people in real life and over the internet so they're very special to me.

I know things'll be awkward at first and that it won't be the same as the Skype chats we have but I still think we'll enjoy seeing each other and being able to hug each other when we first meet. I know I will!

But I want to know, what's your opinion on it? Would you meet up with someone you met on the internet? Have you?

I'm not going to name names but there's a few people I'd be comfortable meeting and others I'd rather not. It's kind of difficult when we are all separated by oceans.

Coffee shops are made for this. Not too inimate, not too public, just right. Its safe, sensible and still kinda cool.

tell a parent or a friend who can go with you. even if they aren't with you throughout the whole meeting, it's better to be safe than sorry to have them meet the person and to have them stay in a certain place while you go off to do s*** with whoever it is.

i've had friends ive met online stay over at my house for a weekend/a couple of weeks bc they needed a place to stay when they were visiting the UK and i offered to cut out their hotel cost, but it's different when an adult man is doing it compared to a teenage girl -- you're only in your mid teens, right? -- and regardless of how you think your family will feel it's better to make sure that someone knows where you are, what you'll be doing and w/ whom you'll be meeting.

Piccolo: Just how many people have you sacrificed?!

I have met a couple of my friends that I met online and it was a blast.
Last month my friend came over to stay for a weekend and I've been up to stay with other friends that I know via the web.

All I would say is that if no one is going with you, give someone close details of where you will be, who with and when just to be safe.

I did it once when I was 16 with my best friend. Technically I've met them more times since, but I no longer consider them an online friend even if we live far away.

I doubt I'd ever do it again, I'm a really anti-social/socially awkward person and I typically have no desire to interact with anyone unless I'm already really good friends with them.

Then maybe visit a coffeeshop in my country.

Personally wouldn't do it. Although I do fantasize sometimes about going on a trip somewhere with some of the weirdos here.

I'll take that as a compliment.
